Orbic’s products cater to both personal and business needs, ensuring connectivity and productivity on the go. In 2019, they approached us to design a new device, the Orbic Myra smart phone.
The Myra was meant to be Orbic’s flagship product. In that sense, it had to reflect Orbic’s philosophy of offering premium features without compromising on affordability. Our goals for this project were:
In our exploration of the mid-range smartphone landscape across Asia and the US, we pinpointed a design sweet spot that sets Myra apart. The standout feature? A vertically aligned triple-camera setup on the rear, breaking away from the typical rectangular or capsule designs that dominate the market. This innovative arrangement not only enhances functionality but also adds a striking visual element to the phone’s back, making it a true conversation starter.
Myra showcases a sleek, fluid design that begins with its elegantly curved corners—a hallmark of premium smartphones. The display lens features a smooth bevel that flows seamlessly from the top edge into the main body, creating a cohesive look. This fluidity extends to the back cover, which isn’t just flat but gracefully transitions from the main body, ensuring a comfortable and seamless feel in the user’s hands.
Myra features a striking metallic finish on its main body, complemented by a glossy rear panel that beautifully reflects light. Collaborating closely with Orbic’s mockup-makers and manufacturers, we meticulously crafted the phone’s weight to ensure it not only looks stunning but also feels substantial in hand. This attention to detail reinforces Myra’s premium aesthetic and flagship status, making it a device that truly stands out.
Even with Myra’s expansive display, the volume and power buttons on the right side are intuitively positioned for easy access by users of all kinds. Our commitment to ergonomics extends further, with the fingerprint sensor strategically placed on the rear panel, allowing effortless access with the index finger—no need to flip the device over.
The Orbic Myra comes in a range of eye-catching colors, including Midnight Black, Ocean Blue, and Rose Gold. This diverse palette not only caters to individual tastes but also ensures that style doesn’t come at a premium, making it an accessible choice for everyone.
Industrial design undoubtedly enhances a product’s appeal, but it must not compromise affordability—doing so would undermine Orbic’s unique selling proposition of offering premium features at accessible prices. In designing the Myra, we collaborated closely with Orbic’s ODM to ensure that both the electrical and mechanical bills of materials stayed within budget.
