SterilSmart

Biomedical Waste Management, Revolutionized
Johari Digital is a leading medical equipment manufacturer with 40+ years of excellence. Johari’s in-house R & D center delivers innovative products for the global healthcare industry. With a focus on developing easy to use products, they have consistently delivered desired results for their clientele.
The Indian healthcare sector has grown at a CAGR of 22% since 2016. One driver of this growth is India’s growing medical tourism industry which offers the same quality of treatment, but at significantly lower costs compared to developed countries.
And this growth has had a significant impact on one particularly unglamorous area: biomedical waste management. Many of these products use chemical or thermal treatments to process waste which can then be removed from the hospitals. These processes are neither energy efficient nor residue free, having high environmental impact.
Microwave Disinfection Systems are compact, rapid, energy efficient, cost effective and have low environmental impact leaving no harmful residues.
Johari Digital tasked us with designing SterilSmart, a portable microwave disinfection system that would look world class and help their client tap both domestic and export markets. The brief was to create a design that they could scale up and down the capacity ladder to create a family of products.

Project Insights

SterilSmart would be the first of its kind product to bring microwave disinfection and mobility in one package. To ensure sales, we would have to create a

Make it Look World Class

We identified leading global players in this space to benchmark our designs and carried out a design audit of their products. After presenting our findings, we built a brand guidelines document with the key pillars of neat and clean, easy to use, precise and reliable. This document helped guide our concept development and selection process.

Reuse existing Frameworks

Johari Digital had already developed a proof of concept and were keen on using it as an underlay for our efforts. We worked within this framework to create designs that enhanced the usability and created a distinctive look while ensuring that the process wouldn’t be impacted.

Make it Scalable

This was critical as they would need both desktop and floor standing versions. Creating a rectilinear form with Mondrianesque splits allowed Johari’s engineers to create multiple versions that came together as a family of products.

And Manufacturable

These units are practically built to order. Given this and the size constraints, designing with sheet metal was the preferred option. We worked within the boundaries of sheet metal design to create a product that was crisp, neat and clean and emphasized precision and reliability. This would satisfy Johari’s requirements of being able to manufacture the product within their facilities in a reliable and cost-effective manner.

Roll with the Changes

This project required coordination between Johari’s technical heads based out of Europe, the client and Johari’s program manager based in different cities in India. And that too during Covid-19 when movement was restricted. Our ability to work over the internet with both the clients and our team (confined to their homes) helped Johari deliver the product to their client in the promised time.
