Engineering the Sound of Commerce

Our Solution
How we helped strengthen Oakter’s reputation as the go-to ODM for fintech hardware.
The Result

The PayTM Soundbox became the audible face of UPI, winning universal adoption across India and recognition abroad.

Make it Iconic, Make it Indestructible, Make it Sing!

Picture this: the chaotic, vibrant marketplace of India. Street vendors, bustling crowds, and a symphony of sounds. In the midst of this, a simple transaction happens. A QR code is scanned, a payment is made. But how do you confirm it? Visually? In that chaos, that’s not always reliable. You need an audible confirmation, a moment of sonic clarity. This is where the Paytm Soundbox comes in.

Paytm — short for “pay through mobile” — is India’s largest homegrown fintech player. With an 8% share of the total UPI transaction volume, PayTM processes nearly $6 billion every single day (2022). PayTM had already established its iconic “Paytm Karo” jingle, and “received payment of…”, as the auditory symbols of India’s digital payments revolution. They wanted to take their Soundbox to the next level—more robust, more cost-effective, and with a sound that could cut through the noise of any market. They partnered with Oakter— one of India’s fastest-growing ODMs with IIT Delhi roots — to make it happen. Oakter, in turn, entrusted us with the final push. The mission was clear: make it iconic, durable, cost-efficient, and mass-manufacturable.

THE CHALLENGE

Our objectives were ambitious:

  • Acoustic Power: Be heard clearly in the chaos of crowded bazaars and busy traffic — 85 dB at 1m, with clarity. We had to ensure the iconic “Paytm Karo” jingle was delivered with crystal-clear clarity, even in the noisiest environments.
  • Survive the elements — dust, heat, humidity, and even the occasional monsoon drizzle. It had to be as tough as the merchants who used it.
  • Scale affordably — at merchant rentals as low as ₹125 per month, PayTM needed BOM and assembly costs to stay razor-thin.
  • Reinforce brand identity — clean, iconic, and instantly recognizable as PayTM.
OUR APPROACH
We approached this project with a blend of scientific rigor, creative ingenuity, and value engineering — all under one roof.

Acoustics: Finding the Perfect Note

The core of the Soundbox is its sound. Sourcing and testing a good speaker — one capable of throwing 85dB of sound at 1 meter — is just the beginning. The real magic is in the acoustic engineering.

We designed a unique acoustic chamber, or a soundscape, around the speaker for maximum projection and clarity. Instead of brute-force loudness, the geometry ensured efficiency, reducing distortion and energy draw. Our goal was to ensure that the jingle wasn’t just loud; it was crisp, clear, and unmistakable. Importantly, we kept the design to minimal assembly steps so that every unit built was consistent in quality.

Durability: Proof Against the Elements

Street markets are brutal. We designed the enclosure to achieve IP54 compliance — dust-tight with resistance to splashes and light rain. A key innovation was in the display area. Instead of a traditional, costly, and difficult-to-seal gasket, we opted for a more elegant and efficient solution. We used a PC lens with a water-resistant adhesive film to create a seamless, hermetic seal. This approach not only enhanced the product’s aesthetic by giving it a seamless, elegant look but also made it reliable at scale.

Value Engineering at Scale

Cost targets were non-negotiable. To hit PayTM’s low monthly rental model, we:

  • worked closely with Oakter to select plastics amenable to thin-wall moulding, balancing cost and toughness.
  • Reduced fasteners and manual assembly steps. Every step we condensed, translated directly into savings.
  • Simplified joins for faster, more error-free production

Each gram of plastic, each second on the assembly line, each fastening process eliminated — it all translated into savings that scaled to millions of units.

THE RESULT

The Outcome

The PayTM Soundbox is now a ubiquitous part of India’s digital commerce landscape. It has been lauded not just in India but internationally — even featured in a Pakistani documentary as a symbol of UPI’s success. For Bang Design, it was more than another device — it was an opportunity to help shape the iconography of India’s fintech revolution.
This project is a powerful example of design as strategy. It shows how we:

  • Translate brand cues (“PayTM Karo”) into tangible design features.
  • Balance acoustic performance, environmental protection, and cost efficiency without compromise.
  • Deliver ODM partnerships where design is inseparable from manufacturing scale and market economics.

By combining design sensitivity, engineering rigor, and relentless cost optimization, we enabled Oakter to deliver a product that is both iconic and democratic — a device as at home on a Mumbai street corner as in a Delhi mall.

Our partnership with Oakter helped deliver a product that is not only functional and robust but has also become a part of the cultural lexicon. It’s a testament to what happens when innovative design, meticulous engineering, and a deep understanding of the user’s context come together.
