Bringing Cricket Training Home

Our Solution
Helped a start-up engineer to launch the world’s first non-powered professional cricket ball throwing machine
The Result
Re-engineered cricket practice around a simple, power-independent mechanism.

The Challenge

For decades, the path to cricketing greatness has been paved with relentless practice, often at a high cost. Aspiring players, particularly in developing regions, face a significant challenge: traditional bowling machines are prohibitively expensive, bulky, and require a constant power source. Even with a human “throw-down” partner, consistency and quality are hard to come by, leading to inefficient and sometimes frustrating training sessions. The true problem wasn’t just a lack of equipment; it was a lack of accessible, affordable, and authentic training for the masses.

This was the challenge that inspired Pratheek Palanethra, a passionate cricketer and engineer. He saw a gap in the market for a machine that was,

Used Zero electricity: The machine had to work without power, making it usable in every field, street, or training ground.
Affordable: It had to be priced for academies, schools, and individual enthusiasts.
Consistent & real: Unlike manual throw downs, the machine needed to deliver repeatable speed, bounce, and line.
Portable: Coaches and players needed to set it up quickly and transport it easily,
to make elite-level practice a reality for everyone.

OUR APPROACH

A Synergy of Engineering and Branding

We partnered with Freebowler to transform this inspired concept into a tangible, production-ready product. Our design philosophy was a blend of technical precision and creative simplicity. We asked ourselves, “How can we capture the elegant chaos of a real bowling arm within a minimalist, mechanical framework?”

Our process was a journey of mechanical and creative discovery:

Kinetic Mimicry

We meticulously analyzed the biomechanics of a fast bowler’s arm. Instead of complex motors and gears, we used a powerful spring-and-lever system to replicate the sling action. The result was a product that not only throws a ball but simulates the crucial release point, forcing the batter to develop proper footwork, timing, and hand-eye coordination.

Power-Free

We designed the machine to be entirely self-sufficient. Its non-electric nature meant no dependence on power grids, making it usable anywhere—from a remote village field to a suburban backyard. The lightweight, collapsible frame allowed it to be folded down and carried like a cricket kit.

Real-Ball Engineering

A core requirement was the ability to use real cricket balls, not the synthetic dimpled balls required by electric machines. Our design used a unique ball-holding cup that throws the ball without squeezing or damaging its seam, ensuring a realistic experience with natural swing and off-the-pitch variations.

Simple-First Design

We focused on making the machine intuitive for the operator to set up and use. A set of lock-pins and pegs allows the unit to be set up in a few minutes. Standing on the machine for ballast, the simple lever-based mechanism means anyone, regardless of cricketing knowledge, can operate it. The adjustable settings for speed and line and length allow for a personalized training experience.

THE RESULT

A Product That Throws the Book at Convention

The Freebowler Superthrower is more than just a machine; it’s a statement about democratizing sport. The final product is a testament to the power of design to solve real-world problems.

  • A New Market Category: By creating a non-electric, affordable alternative to expensive machines, Freebowler opened up a new market, making high-quality cricket practice accessible to millions.
  • Global Impact: The machine has been a resounding success, selling 1,000s of units in 15 countries and becoming an integral part of training for everyone from individual enthusiasts to professional clubs.
  • Shark Tank Success: The product’s innovative design and market potential earned it a spot on Shark Tank India Season 2, where it secured a deal with Namita Thapar, solidifying its place as a viable and scalable business.
  • Backed by a Legend: The credibility of the product was further amplified by the endorsement and investment from Indian cricketer R. Ashwin, proving its effectiveness and value at the highest level of the game.

The Freebowler story is a classic example of how a simple design can disrupt an industry and create a future where every aspiring cricketer has the opportunity to practice like a pro, anytime, anywhere.
