Instant Oxygen, Anywhere

Our Solution
How we designed and developed the category-first power free Oxygen generating devices out of India
The Result
India’s first Power free Emergency Oxygen Generators with patented mixing and delivery mechanism

The Challenge

Every second counts in emergencies. Traditional oxygen solutions—bulky cylinders or power-dependant concentrators—often fail in critical windows. O2-Matic’s founders, alumni of the INSEAD Executive Programme, envisioned a portable, power-free oxygen generator that could deliver medical-grade O₂ immediately, anywhere this need arose.

The idea took root during India’s devastating second wave of COVID-19, when oxygen scarcity became a national crisis. As co-founder John Joy recalls:

“It was an amazing moment. We immediately had to build a prototype and see.”

At first, there was doubt—would a chemical reaction be controllable enough to be safe? Would oxygen flow steadily instead of in spurts? But the breakthrough came when the team realized they could design a system that was sealed, portable, and could be shipped like a Coke bottle—a radical departure from heavy cylinders.

THE SOLUTION

At Bang Design, we partnered with O2-Matic to translate this vision into a practical, manufacturable product.

  • Dual-Chamber Cartridge: Upper section holds distilled water; lower compartment contains the proprietary powder.
  • Patented Quarter-Turn Release Mechanism: A simple twist releases water, triggers the oxygen-generating reaction, and ensures the process is smooth and safe—no backflow, just pure, continuous oxygen.
  • Performance: Each cartridge generates enough O₂ for 15 minutes, and a two-pack sustains oxygen delivery for the crucial golden half-hour—often the wait time before medical help arrives.

Not everything worked smoothly the first time. Early prototypes leaked slightly around the seal, and the oxygen output dipped below medical-grade levels. But with each iteration—tightening tolerances, refining the geometry, rethinking the flow path—we moved closer to reliability. That process of trial and error became the backbone of the final patented design.

Scaling Through Design

To maximize usability, we explored multiple form factors:

  • Wall-Mounted Units for malls, offices, and airports.
  • Backpack Variants for motorcycle-equipped first responders.
  • Large-Format Units to back up operating theatres and emergency centres during disasters.

As one critical care specialist observed:
“Earlier we would go looking for oxygen during emergencies. In this case, oxygen comes to you.”

Prototype and Market Enablement

  • High-Quality Prototype Development: Built with our partners in China, the working prototype wasn’t just a model—it hissed, bubbled, and filled a bag with clean oxygen on command. That visceral demonstration helped O2-Matic raise funding for their India program.

  • Engineering Proof: Rigorous testing validated the reaction system and proved stable airflow.

  • Supply Chain Enablement: We identified moulders and manufacturers who could tool up and scale production for commercial launch.

Real-World Deployment & Reach

  • Speed & Purity: The flagship Portia device delivers 99.7–99.9% pure medical-grade oxygen in under 40 seconds, with no reliance on electricity.
  • Public Accessibility: Bengaluru International Airport became the first public place in India to install O2-Matic in its first-aid stations:

“We have installed six, we have ordered ten.”
Soon after, Cochin International Airport followed, reinforcing trust in the product’s reliability.

  • Sales & Adoption: Over 1,000 units have been deployed across India in airports, homes, and public spaces.

THE IMPACT

  • Life-Saving Speed: Oxygen in under a minute reduces critical response gaps.
  • Infrastructure Independence: No power, no cylinders—just a sealed, portable system.
  • Proven Business Impact: The working prototype, born from trial and error, directly enabled funding and accelerated O2-Matic’s go-to-market program.
  • Versatile Use Cases: From COPD and cardiac emergencies to disaster relief and rural healthcare.
  • Made in India, Patented Globally: A healthcare innovation designed to scale worldwide.
