The Story
Eximer, a startup founded by industry veterans, approached us to design an ID card reader for schools. The goal was to remove the manual attendance burden from teachers and eliminate the possibility of malpractice. The solution had to be intuitive for students, robust for daily use and visually refreshing in an environment where most access control devices looked industrial.
Understanding the Environment
We studied how students interacted with access systems across multiple schools. The product needed to feel approachable and child friendly while guiding students toward a clear interaction point. This set the foundation for a form that invited use rather than intimidated.
THE SOLUTION
Design Direction
We created a soft rounded rectangle with C2 continuity corners and flowing surfaces. The device sits against the wall with a visual lightness that makes it seem suspended. A black glossy facade with a mirror finish added a playful touch. Students could see their reflection as they tapped their card which increased engagement.
Â
This direction was deliberately different from the boxy silver access readers common in IT offices at the time. Schools required a friendlier language and the product delivered exactly that.
THE PROCESS
Engineering for Real-World Use
Good design must perform. We strengthened the internal structure through iterative design and FEA because we anticipated that children would try to hang on the device. The final form comfortably withstands the weight of a child pulling on it.
We ensured compliance with IP54 to protect against dust which is common in Indian school environments. Materials were selected to resist UV exposure so the product would maintain its appearance and structural integrity in outdoor corridors.
Prototyping and Validation
We worked with our vendor network to build high quality prototypes. These helped stakeholders evaluate the product in real scale and provided validation before moving to production.
THE OUTCOME
Build Your Next Intelligent Device
The final ID card reader made the attendance process seamless and consistent. It created a more efficient routine for teachers and a more engaging interaction for students. Schools gained a system that was reliable, durable and visually aligned with modern educational spaces.
