Amazon and DDOT Launch E-Cargo Bike Delivery Pilot
Amazon has partnered with the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) to launch a ten-month pilot program, ‘MicroFreight DC,’ in Washington, DC. The initiative, which began in May 2026, will see Amazon Delivery Service Partners using a fleet of up to 15 battery-powered four-wheeled e-cargo bikes for neighborhood deliveries instead of traditional vans.
Details
The e-cargo bikes, limited to 15 mph, feature enclosed seating areas, windshields, and wipers for rider comfort. They will operate out of a dedicated microhub in Southwest DC and are prohibited from riding on sidewalks. The pilot aims to study the impact of shifting ‘last-mile’ deliveries from larger vans to smaller electric cargo vehicles on congestion, noise, emissions, and delivery efficiency in urban neighborhoods.
