A novel and comprehensive hybrid of HEPA and UV LED Technologies to combat the Coronavirus in cars
The Story
Unlike home air purifiers, car environments pose unique constraints:
Space Efficiency: Limited cabin space meant the design needed to be slim, portable, and unobtrusive.
Airflow Engineering: Small fans often lack the capacity to circulate and clean cabin air effectively. A compact centrifugal fan was chosen to serve the product
Seamless Integration: Multiple technologies — ionizer, UVC LED, titanium mesh, and HEPA filter — had to work together without making the unit bulky or noisy.
THE CHALLENGE
Designing a Human-Centric Solution

THE PROCESS
Design Progression
A car’s interior is a personal, intimate space. The device needed to feel less like a clinical gadget and more like a minimalist sculpture. We conceived a sleek, cylindrical form with a soft, matte finish that feels natural to the touch. The goal was for it to disappear into the car’s aesthetic, effortlessly fitting into a standard cup holder.
The user interface was boiled down to its most essential elements: a single, elegant button and a subtle LED light ring that communicates the air quality status at a glance. We chose materials not just for their durability but for their warmth and tactile quality. This wasn’t just a product; it was a companion, a guardian of health that felt calm and non-intrusive. Our design focused on the human need for clean air and a sense of well-being, translating complex technology into a simple, beautiful, and emotionally resonant form.
THE SOLUTION
System Integration
The result is the Pepsico beverage dispenser, a product that set the standards for non carbonated beverage dispensing. Its most defining features are:
Fan and Motor Selection

This was the single most important technical decision. A powerful fan generates high air volume and thus a better Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR). However, in a quiet car cabin, a noisy fan is a deal-breaker. The final selection was a high-efficiency centrifugal fan that delivered a robust airflow while operating at a whisper-quiet level, ensuring a peaceful driving experience.
HEPA Filtration
The fan pulls in polluted air, which first passes through Biofi’s HEPA filter, trapping 99.97% of particulate matter down to 0.3 microns.
UVC LED and Titanium Mesh

The air then passes over the titanium mesh, which is activated by Biofi’s UVC LED. This photocatalytic oxidation process effectively breaks down and neutralizes harmful VOCs, odors, and airborne bacteria and viruses
Negative Ionizer
As the final stage, our integrated ionizer module releases a controlled concentration of negative ions. These ions attach to any remaining airborne pollutants, making them too heavy to stay suspended, causing them to fall to the floor, where they can be vacuumed away. This final step provided an extra layer of active air refreshment, creating a clean, crisp, and revitalized cabin atmosphere.
THE RESULT
Paving a Path to Cleaner Air
Although Biofi’s journey ended, the project was a resounding success in achieving its core objectives. We proved that it is possible to design and engineer a car air purifier that combines elegant aesthetics with uncompromising performance.
