Disinfecting Occupied Spaces
Our Solution
How we helped a startup launch spatial disinfectant device at the height of the pandemic
The Result
A product that can be manufactured on demand using batch manufacturing techniques to disinfect hospital rooms during Covid 19 pandemic
The Story
Biofi is an Indian startup specializing in UV-based disinfection devices for hospitals, commercial spaces, and consumers. Their product portfolio spans diverse applications, from disinfecting entire rooms to treating cars and even small household items like vegetables and cutlery. By vertically integrating design, development, and manufacturing, Biofi secured investment from prominent Indian angel and venture capital investors.
Â
During the Covid pandemic, the demand for reliable disinfection solutions surged. Both central and state governments were under pressure to equip hospitals and public facilities with effective tools to control the spread of infection. Globally, the UV disinfection equipment market was valued at USD 4.12 billion in 2023 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 8.23% from 2024 to 2030, underscoring the long-term relevance of these solutions.
THE CHALLENGE
Global Standards, Local Manufacturing
Biofi wanted to create a product line that could establish them as a trusted name across institutional and consumer markets. Their first product in this line was the Powertron, a mobile UV-C disinfection unit designed to be wheeled into spaces such as hospital rooms and operating theaters.
Â
The design brief came with three critical requirements:
- The product had to stand shoulder to shoulder with global competitors in terms of quality and appearance.
- It needed to be viable for economical, low-volume manufacturing to minimize upfront investment.
- It had to be manufacturable entirely within Biofi’s in-house facilities to maintain control over quality and timelines.
The challenge was to balance world-class standards with India’s practical realities of cost, supply chain complexity, and rapid pandemic-driven demand.
THE PROCESS
Designing Under Pandemic Constraints
Benchmarking Global Standards
Â
We began with a comprehensive audit of international products to establish a benchmark for performance and aesthetics. From this, we developed a design language that positioned Biofi products as neat, precise, reliable, and intuitive to use.
Designed for Batch Manufacturing
Â
Targeting hospitals and other institutional spaces, Powertron was engineered for batch production rather than large-volume mass manufacturing. This strategy allowed the product to evolve with feedback while keeping upfront investment low. Sheet metal construction was chosen for its fast lead times and reduced tooling cost, making it ideal for pandemic conditions when supply chains were disrupted.
Material Selection for Longevity
Â
Since UV-C radiation degrades plastics, exposed plastics were eliminated from the design. Instead, the unit relied on sheet metal panels and tubular structures, ensuring robustness and enabling local manufacture through a single vendor. This not only improved reliability but also simplified sourcing.
Mobility and Handling
Â
Mobility was essential in institutional environments. The unit had to be moved quickly between rooms and up staircases by hospital staff. Powertron was engineered to be lightweight enough for two people to carry without strain, which also lowered overall product cost.
Serviceability as a Priority
Â
Hospitals needed assurance of minimal downtime. The design allowed rapid replacement of critical components directly on-site, reducing the need for technical expertise at the user’s end. For more complex repairs, particularly PCBs, Biofi centralized servicing at their factory, ensuring consistency and quality.
Remote Collaboration Under Lockdown
Â
All design and engineering work took place during pandemic lockdowns. Despite the restrictions, the team collaborated entirely remotely, aligning quickly to deliver the product within the urgent timelines set by the market.
THE RESULT
Design That Delivered Under Pressure
The Powertron gave Biofi a strong foothold in the institutional disinfection market at a time of unprecedented need. Hospitals and healthcare facilities valued its reliability, mobility, and ease of servicing.
Â
Our design for batch manufacturing enabled Biofi to overcome supply chain disruptions caused by the pandemic, ensuring that units could be produced and delivered when they were needed most.
Â
By aligning international standards with efficient, locally controlled manufacturing, Powertron helped Biofi establish credibility as a company capable of developing professional-grade equipment in India. The product demonstrated that thoughtful design choices, from materials to servicing, could deliver both immediate utility and long-term brand value.
Key Learnings
The Biofi Powertron is a case study in how design can solve urgent, large-scale problems without compromising on quality or manufacturability. By combining mobility, serviceability, and batch manufacturing efficiency, the product addressed the dual challenges of pandemic-driven demand and disrupted global supply chains.
Â
More than a disinfection device, Powertron positioned Biofi as a serious contender in the global UV disinfection market. It stands as an example of how design and engineering, even under crisis conditions, can deliver solutions that are both timely and enduring.
