Grandpad: Tablet Charging Dock for Seniors
Our Solution
How we developed a charging dock that would also allow seniors to make video calls.
The Result
A product that enabled NEXA to enter the assisted living industry.
The Story
NEXA’s Perfect Fit for GrandPad’s Long-Lifecycle Hardware Needs
NEXA is an emerging force in enterprise mobility, combining telecom services with custom Android hardware. As an Android Enterprise Gold Partner, NEXA supports organizations needing device fleets that stay reliable, manageable, and available far beyond typical consumer refresh cycles. Their model offers something rare in mobility: long-term inventory stability, predictable hardware availability, and tailored support for specialized use cases.
GrandPad, a global leader in simplified communication technology for older adults, operates in a world where consistency matters. Their mission is to reduce digital friction for seniors by offering large touch-targets, minimal menus, and predictable behavior. This philosophy extends to the hardware ecosystem. GrandPad needed a partner who could supply custom tablets and accessories for years without the risk of discontinuation. NEXA had two suitable tablets already in production, an 8-inch and a 10-inch model, and approached Bang Design to create a single charging dock that could accommodate both seamlessly.
The dock would serve as the everyday charging and communication station for senior users. It needed to be effortless, stable, highly visible, and reassuring.
A Dock That Seniors Can Trust, Every Day
1. Intuitive Drop-In Docking
Seniors should be able to slide the tablet into place without alignment struggles, excessive force, or visual precision.
2. High Stability in Daily Use
The dock must not rattle, tip, or slide, especially when users insert the tablet with both hands or from an angle.
3. Clear, High-Visibility Charging Indicator
Charging feedback must be unmistakable from across the room, even for users with reduced eyesight.
4. Ergonomic Angle for Comfortable Video Calling
The tablet should sit at a relaxed viewing angle for long conversations with family and caregivers.
5. Long-Lifecycle Manufacturability
The dock needed to be robust, easy to produce, and consistent across multi-year supply runs handled by Nexa’s manufacturing partners.
Understanding Seniors and Comfortable Video Calls
We began by studying posture, gaze lines, and head-neck ergonomics for older adults. The target was to identify an angle that allowed a senior to sit back in a chair, maintain eye contact naturally, and avoid strain. Once we validated this geometry, we built the dock around it.
Designing a Universal Mating System for Two Tablet Sizes
Accommodating two different tablet widths in a single dock required a guided and forgiving insertion pathway.
Â
We engineered:
- A guided drop-in channel that funnels the tablet toward the charging connector
- A controlled landing zone with rubber backing to prevent rattling
- A connector alignment pocket that allows the tablets to find their charging port without user finesse
By raising the dock height to more than 50 percent of the tablet’s landscape width, we created a broader support envelope. This prevented tip-over and ensured stable docking even with imperfect user handling.
Stability Through Weight Distribution and Grid
Â
We added a steel ballast plate inside the enclosure to shift the center of mass low and forward, making the dock visually light but physically anchored.
Â
To complement this:
- Rubber feet prevented sliding on tables and countertops
- Rubberized tablet-rest surfaces eliminated plastic-to-plastic clatter and improved perceived quality
Every tactile and acoustic cue was designed to feel calm, reassuring, and premium.
A Charging Indicator Built for Aging Eyes
We introduced a front-facing light guide that magnifies the LED’s glow. This allowed seniors to confirm charging from across the room without bending over or squinting.
The indicator remains visible in indirect light, low light, and at off-axis angles, which suits real home and care environments.
Manufacturing Integration
Â
Once the design was frozen, we worked closely with NEXA’s electromechanical integration team to blend mechanical, PCB, thermal, and connector constraints into a single manufacturable solution.
Â
We delivered:
- Complete 3D and 2D engineering packages
- CMF specifications tuned to long-lifecycle production
- DFM and DFMA recommendations for smooth handoff to partners
This ensured the dock could be reproduced reliably for years, supporting GrandPad’s product continuity requirements.
THE RESULT
A Production-Ready Platform for Assisted Living Environments
Our work enabled NEXA to present a compelling, production-ready accessory ecosystem tailored to GrandPad’s long-term needs.
Â
The charging dock:
- Fits both 8-inch and 10-inch tablets with intuitive drop-in ease
- Remains stable during insertion and removal
- Provides a large, clear charging indicator for seniors
- Supports comfortable, natural video calling ergonomics
- Meets long-lifecycle manufacturing constraints without unnecessary complexity
The solution strengthened NEXA’s pitch and positioned them as a reliable long-term partner for GrandPad’s senior-focused communication platform.
