Designing Peace of Mind for New Parents
Our Solution
How we helped a startup pre-launch an infant wellness wearable in the US market
The Result
A device that takes the rough with the smooth, comfortable for the baby, yet withstanding everything from liquids to impacts.
The Story
Every new parent knows the feeling—hovering over a crib, checking if the baby’s chest is rising, waiting for the soft sound of a breath. For generations, that small act has been tied to the biggest fear: sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
Technology had tried to help, but most solutions felt like compromises. Bulky cameras, tangled wires, socks that never stayed on—parents traded one anxiety for another. Safin Baby came to us with a simple but profound question:
“Can we design something that just disappears into daily life, yet keeps watch when parents can’t?”
THE CHALLENGE
Trust, Comfort, and Clinical Accuracy
The brief wasn’t about building another gadget. It was about trust.
- Could we make a monitor that was safe enough for a newborn’s delicate skin?
- Could it feel so soft and natural that parents would forget it was even there?
- Could it still deliver the accuracy of a medical device, while being affordable for real families?
- And most importantly—could it give parents the comfort of knowing that if something was wrong, they’d know instantly?
THE APPROACH
Safety and Softness by Design
We began by listening—to parents, to pediatricians, and to our own instincts as designers.
Safety First
We explored baby-safe standards that go beyond compliance: ensuring the patch was large enough to never pose a swallowing risk, and adhesives were as gentle as a Band-Aid.
Comfort That Reassures
The patch had to feel less like a device and more like a second skin. We chose soft curves, muted colors, and playful graphics—not decoration, but signals that said, “this belongs with your baby.”
To get there, we turned to PTC’s Creo with ISDX surfacing tools. These allowed us to sculpt soft, automotive-quality surfaces that created a smooth, pebble-like form. The result wasn’t just visually gentle—it was tactilely comforting, reassuring to parents’ touch, and practical. That continuous form meant the patch was also easy to clean and maintain, an essential requirement for a product used daily with infants.
Technology Without the Noise
Inside the tender form sat sensors capable of tracking breathing, temperature, sleep position, and patterns. A low-power system gave parents up to 15 days on a single charge, because the last thing anyone needs at 3 a.m. is another dead battery.
Just as importantly, the device was sealed to IP67 standards. That meant if the patch was accidentally dropped in a bucket of water, nothing would happen—it would keep working exactly as before. For parents, that kind of durability wasn’t just a feature, it was peace of mind in disguise.
THE OUTCOME
Peace of Mind, Made Wearable
The result was the world’s first ultra-thin infant smart patch. Small enough to sit unnoticed on the chest, or clip quietly onto a diaper. Powerful enough to alert parents within seconds if breathing paused, if the baby rolled into a risky position, or if temperature slipped out of range.
At $129, it cost less than half of what competing monitors charged—putting peace of mind within reach of many more families.
Real life is messy, and we designed for that too:
- During a late-night diaper change, if the patch slips into the sink, it keeps working.
- If it’s dropped into a bucket of bath water while juggling toys and towels, there’s no panic—it’s sealed to IP67, so it carries on unaffected.
- Even through the chaos of daily spills and spit-ups, the smooth pebble-like surface makes it easy to wipe clean and safe to use again instantly.
One mother put it simply after testing the patch: “For the first time since my son was born, I slept through the night.”

Key Learnings
Designing for babies teaches you humility.
- Parents don’t just want accuracy—they want reassurance in every detail, from the way the patch looks to the way it feels in their hand.
- Safety isn’t just numbers on a checklist. It’s about creating something parents instinctively trust.
- Affordability is not an afterthought. It’s what makes the difference between a product for the few and a solution for everyone.
- Durability isn’t a luxury—it’s a safeguard. Designing to IP67 meant one less thing for parents to worry about in already chaotic lives.
We left the project reminded that in infant care, the best design is invisible—it simply works, while love takes the center stage.
Why It Matters
The Safin Baby Patch wasn’t built to impress. It was built so parents could close their eyes at night knowing someone—or something—was watching over their child.
That’s what design should do: make the impossible possible, and make the unbearable a little easier.
