Biomedical Waste Management, Revolutionized
Our Solution
How we helped Johari Digital develop the World’s 1st Mobile Microwave Disinfection System with easy portability
The Result
A design that conveys India’s capability to build World Class products
The Story
Johari Digital is a leading medical equipment manufacturer with more than 40 years of expertise. Their in-house R&D center has delivered innovative healthcare products across global markets, focusing on designs that are easy to use, precise, and consistently aligned with client needs.
India’s healthcare sector has grown at a CAGR of 22% since 2016, supported by the rise of medical tourism that delivers world-class treatment at a fraction of the cost found in developed countries. This rapid expansion has placed new demands on biomedical waste management, a critical but often neglected area.
THE CHALLENGE
Safer, Cleaner Infection Control
Traditional biomedical waste treatment methods rely on chemical or thermal processes. These approaches are not energy efficient, they leave harmful residues, and they have a significant environmental impact. With rising patient volumes and stricter regulatory standards, healthcare providers needed a safer and more sustainable solution.
THE SOLUTION
Microwave Technology for Sustainable Sterilization
Johari Digital tasked our team with creating SterilSmart, a portable microwave disinfection system designed for both domestic and international markets. Microwave disinfection technology offers clear advantages over legacy systems. It is compact, rapid, energy efficient, and cost-effective. Most importantly, it eliminates waste without leaving behind harmful residues.
Our design efforts were aimed at giving SterilSmart a world-class form while ensuring it could be manufactured at Johari’s facilities and scaled across different product sizes. The system was built to support both desktop and floor-standing versions, opening the door for wider adoption.
DESIGN APPROACH
Built for Scale and Reliability
We began by benchmarking against global leaders in biomedical waste management. From there, we developed brand guidelines around neatness, reliability, and ease of use. The design leveraged Johari’s proof-of-concept framework while introducing refinements that would support scalability.
For manufacturability, the product was engineered in sheet metal, ensuring precision and cost-effectiveness. This choice allowed Johari to move quickly into low-volume production while keeping the design consistent across versions.
EXECUTION
Delivered Under Pandemic Constraints
The project took shape during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, requiring collaboration across teams in Europe and India. Despite the restrictions, remote workflows ensured timely delivery and alignment with Johari’s production schedules. The outcome was a manufacturable, scalable, and globally competitive product that addressed a pressing healthcare need.
Forsta Medtech claims 90% market share in India’s medical microwave sector, emphasizing eco-friendly benefits like replacing autoclaves to save water equivalent to supplying 10,000 people annually
