The Story
Innominds is a digital transformation and product engineering services company working with global enterprises to accelerate innovation. Trimble is a leader in positioning technologies and fleet management solutions. Together, we partnered on the design and development of Trimble’s first asset tracking device to be engineered out of India.
THE CHALLENGE
Compliance, Reliability, and Scale
Trimble needed an asset tracking device that could be mounted on trucks and deliver real-time location data to fleet owners. The product had to meet India’s AIS 140 standard, which mandates IP67 ingress protection, rugged design, and reliable communication.
Working alongside Innominds, our role was to design and engineer the enclosure to comply with these stringent requirements, validate it for IP testing, and ensure it was practical to manufacture at scale.
THE PROCESS
Exploring Design Directions
We explored two independent design approaches:
- Planar Seal Enclosure: A conventional two-box design with a planar gasket seal.
- Radial Seal Enclosure: A radical “paddle pop” concept with a circular radial seal.
We presented Trimble with a complete cost–benefit analysis (CBA). While the radial seal offered novelty, the planar seal was chosen for its familiarity and proven reliability, helping Trimble accelerate time to market.
THE SOLUTION
Engineering for Reliability
Shallow Bucket Profile Seal
The Molex connector’s size forced us to introduce a dip in the parting line. We designed this dip as a shallow bucket profile, with a gentle slope that distributed pressure evenly on the gasket. This ensured IP67 compliance.
Connector Draft Geometry
The connector required a dead perpendicular wall. To achieve this on the core side, we created complex draft angles that allowed lifter movement during tooling. This ensured the part could be manufactured reliably without distortion.
Light Guides for Visibility
We designed integrated light guides to channel LED signals from the main PCB to the surface of the enclosure. This provided clear and visible status indications for the driver.
Practical Deployment
Versatile Mounting Bracket
We engineered a mounting bracket that allowed the tracker to be fitted securely to a wide range of trucks already in service, making deployment simpler and more cost-effective.
Prototyped Gaskets
Trimble’s ODM partner faced challenges in producing consistent gaskets. Our team stepped in to design and prototype gasket solutions, ensuring reliable sealing performance during testing.
THE RESULT
Engineering That Enables Adoption
The final design met AIS 140 standards, passed IP67 validation, and was ready for deployment across Trimble’s truck fleet management ecosystem. More importantly, this project represented Trimble’s first asset tracking device developed out of India, a milestone combining global product standards with local engineering expertise.
Takeaway
Bang Design partnered with Innominds and Trimble to turn regulatory requirements and engineering challenges into a manufacturable, field-ready solution. From enclosure design to gasket validation, every decision was made with reliability and deployment in mind.
