The LEGO GaN Charger

Building Fun into Function
At Bang Design, we believe functionality can be fun. That’s why we’re excited to share the story behind our intern Dipanshu’s innovative design – the LEGO GaN charger (patent-pending)!
Let’s dive deeper into this case study and explore how Dipanshu transformed a mainstream tech accessory into a playful and practical solution.

The Challenge: Bland and Boring Chargers

Traditional phone chargers are a dime a dozen. They’re typically white or black slabs, offering little to no customization. This lack of creativity inspired Dipanshu to find a way to break the mold.

The Solution: A LEGO-inspired GaN powerhouse

The idea was to reimagine the charger as a customizable LEGO block. This design boasts two key features:
  • Easy Pin Swapping: Forget bulky adapters! The LEGO-like pins allow users to quickly switch between US, Indian, or European plugs based on their travel needs.
  • Modular Wattage: This charger caters to different charging requirements. Users can choose between a 65w option for everyday use or a powerhouse 120w+ version for faster charging of laptops and tablets.

The Design Journey: From Brainstorming to Brilliance

The LEGO GaN charger wasn’t born overnight. The design process involved meticulous research and iteration:
  • Research Phase: We started by thoroughly analyzing hundreds of existing charger designs.
  • Inspiration Strikes: Recognizing the potential for modularity and customization, LEGO blocks became his lightbulb moment.
  • Iteration is Key: The journey from inspiration to final design wasn't linear. We sketched a staggering 40-50 design variations, refining 5 of the most promising concepts.
  • 3D Modeling Magic: Once the final concept was chosen, we then meticulously created 7-8 different versions in Creo Parametric, the industry standard 3d CAD platform. He then used Blender to infuse life in his models creating stunning renders and animations.
  • Time Investment: The entire design process took approximately 20 days, highlighting the dedication and effort required to turn a creative spark into a polished product.

Key Learnings: Simplicity Has Layers

Through this project, he gained valuable insights into the design world:

  • Simplicity is a Challenge: Counterintuitively, designing a simple yet functional product like the LEGO GaN charger can be more demanding than tackling complex designs with intricate features.
  • Refinement Through Iteration: The final design was far more polished than the initial concept. This highlights the importance of continuous refinement through multiple iterations.
  • Time is of the Essence: Reaching a final design takes significant time investment, even for seemingly straightforward products.
